What is scuff and scratch repairs?

A scuff and scratch repair uses SMART repair methods to refinish only the damaged part of a panel rather than respraying the whole thing. The area is sanded back, primed, sprayed in a basecoat mixed to your paint code, lacquered and polished. Signature carries out most repairs in a few hours, mobile or at our Radcliffe body shop.

Scratches and scuffs are the most common damage a car picks up, and almost none of it is your fault. Supermarket car parks, narrow gateposts, wheelie bins, hedges, other people's doors and the occasional bit of vandalism all leave marks in the paint, and a single scrape across a door is enough to make a tidy car look neglected.

Signature has been repairing scuffed and scratched paintwork across Greater Manchester and the North West since 2008. We use SMART repair (Small to Medium Area Repair Technology), which refinishes the damaged area and blends it into the surrounding panel instead of respraying the whole wing or door. The work is done at your home or workplace in most cases, or at our body shop at Radcliffe when the damage is too big for a mobile visit.

There is a practical reason to get on with it as well as a cosmetic one. Once a scratch has cut through the clear coat and basecoat into primer or bare metal, the panel is open to water and road salt, and what starts as a line in the paint turns into a rust bubble that costs far more to put right. It is also the first thing a buyer or a lease inspector looks at.

How does a car scratch repair work?

The damaged area is sanded back, rebuilt layer by layer, resprayed in a colour matched paint and then polished into the surrounding panel. The technician starts by washing and degreasing the area so nothing gets trapped under the new paint, then masks off everything around the repair to keep dust and overspray off the rest of the car.

The scratch itself is flatted back until the edges are no longer sharp, which is what stops the repair showing as a line later. Deeper damage is filled and built up in stages rather than in one thick coat. The area is then primed, and the basecoat is mixed to your vehicle's paint code and sprayed in thin passes so the colour builds evenly.

Lacquer goes on last, and the panel is finally machine polished and buffed so the new clear coat sits flush with the old and reflects light the same way. Done correctly you should not be able to find the repair by eye or by running a hand over the panel.

Which scuffs and scratches can be repaired?

Almost all of them, from light marks in the clear coat to deep scratches that have gone through to the metal. Depth changes how the job is done rather than whether it can be done. A superficial scratch that has only disturbed the lacquer can often be corrected by machine polishing alone, while anything that has cut into the basecoat or primer needs filling, priming and respraying.

The limits are worth being straight about. If a panel has been rippled or creased as well as scratched, that is bodywork before it is paintwork. If rust has already spread under the paint, the corrosion has to be cut out properly or it will come back through the new finish. And if damage runs across three or four panels, a conventional panel respray is usually the more sensible answer, and we will say so rather than sell you a repair that will not hold up.

  • Key scratches along doors, wings and bonnets
  • Bumper scuffs and corner scrapes
  • Car park dings and door edge damage
  • Scrapes from gateposts, bollards and hedges
  • Light clear coat scratches and swirl marks
  • Deep scratches through to primer or bare metal

Can you repair scratches at my home or workplace?

Yes, and that is how most of this work is done. The mobile unit arrives with the same paint mixing system, spray equipment and curing lamps used in the workshop, and the repair is carried out on your driveway or in your works car park while you get on with your day.

Some jobs still belong at the body shop in Radcliffe. Damage across a whole panel, repairs that need a bumper removing, and anything involving corrosion or structural work is better handled indoors under controlled conditions with proper extraction.

Weather decides the rest. Basecoat and lacquer will not flash off and cure correctly in rain, damp or near freezing conditions, so if the forecast is against us we would rather move the appointment than hand back a finish that will fail within the year.

Is a SMART repair cheaper than a body shop respray?

It is, because you are paying to refinish a patch of a panel rather than the whole panel. A traditional respray means removing trim, spraying the full door or wing and often blending into the panels either side. A SMART repair isolates the damage, which cuts both the materials and the labour involved.

That difference matters most when you are weighing up an insurance claim. For a lot of scratches and scuffs the repair costs less than going through your policy would once the excess and the loss of no claims discount are counted, so people pay directly and keep the claim for something that actually needs it. Quotes are free, fixed and given with no obligation, so you can compare before deciding either way.

What we cover

Scuff & Scratch Repairs we carry out

Key scratch repair

A key or a ring dragged down a car usually cuts straight through the clear coat and colour into primer. The scratch is flatted, filled where it has gone deep, primed and resprayed, then blended along the panel so the repair does not stop in an obvious line.

Bumper scuffs and corner scrapes

Bumpers take the most abuse and are the easiest thing to scrape on a bollard or a low wall. Plastic bumpers need a flexible primer and the right technique, otherwise the paint cracks the next time the bumper flexes in cold weather.

Car park and door edge damage

Chipped door edges, scrapes along the crease line and the marks left by the car parked next to you. Small individually, but they collect, and a car with damage on three doors reads as tired even when the rest of it is clean.

Light scratch and swirl removal

If a scratch has only disturbed the lacquer and your fingernail does not catch in it, machine polishing will often take it out with no paint at all. We will tell you when that is the case rather than spraying something that does not need spraying.

Deep scratches to bare metal

Once a scratch reaches the steel or aluminium underneath, it will corrode. These are built back up in stages, primer first, then colour, then lacquer, so the panel is sealed properly rather than covered over.

Lease returns and pre sale tidy ups

Cosmetic damage is charged hard at the end of a lease or knocked off the price by a trade buyer. Getting the scuffs and scratches sorted beforehand normally costs less than the deduction and makes the car far easier to sell.

Answers

Scuff & Scratch Repairs: your questions answered

How much does it cost to repair a scratch on a car?

It depends on how deep the scratch is, how long it is, and how many panels it crosses. A single scuff on one bumper is at the cheap end, while a key scratch running the length of a car costs more because several panels have to be prepared and blended. Every quote is free, fixed and given with no obligation, normally within 24 hours of you sending photos.

How long does a scuff and scratch repair take?

Most single panel repairs take two to four hours from arrival to finished, including curing and polishing. Damage spread across several panels, or work that needs a bumper removing, takes longer and is usually booked into the Radcliffe body shop for a day. We will tell you the expected time when we quote so you can plan around it.

Can a deep scratch down to the metal be repaired?

Yes. A scratch through the clear coat, basecoat and primer into bare metal is repairable as long as the metal itself is sound and has not started to rot. The exposed area is cleaned back, primed to seal it, then built up in colour and lacquer. If rust has already spread underneath, that has to be cut out first or it will return through the new paint.

Should I claim on my insurance for scratched paintwork?

Often it is not worth it. Because a SMART repair refinishes only the damaged area rather than the whole panel, the cost of many scuff and scratch repairs is lower than what a claim would cost you once the policy excess and the loss of your no claims discount are taken into account. Get a free fixed quote first, then decide with real numbers in front of you.

Will the new paint match the rest of my car?

Yes. Every vehicle carries a manufacturer paint code, and the basecoat is mixed to that code before spraying. On cars where the original finish has faded from sunlight or age, we match to the panel as it looks now rather than to the factory formula, and blend the edges of the repair into the surrounding paint so there is no visible step in colour.

Do you come out to Bolton, Bury and the rest of Greater Manchester?

Yes. The mobile service covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and West Yorkshire, so Bolton, Bury, Salford, Prestwich and the surrounding towns are all routine visits. The body shop is at Unit C, The Yard, Rear of Constellation Mill, Radcliffe, M26 4AD, open Monday to Friday 09:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 16:00.

Is the repair guaranteed?

Yes. Parts and workmanship are guaranteed on every scuff and scratch repair we carry out. If the paint lifts, the colour is out or the lacquer fails, bring it back and we will put it right. That guarantee is also the reason we turn work away when a panel needs proper bodywork instead of a cosmetic repair.

When can I wash the car after a scratch repair?

Leave it a couple of days before washing, and keep a pressure washer lance well away from the repaired area for the first few weeks. Fresh paint keeps hardening after it has cured enough to handle, so avoid waxing, polishing or anything abrasive over the repair for around a month. After that, treat it exactly like the rest of the paintwork.
