Alloy Wheel Refurbishment in Cheshire

Cheshire is four postcode areas and a lot of ground, so we work it in planned runs, grouping bookings around Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Macclesfield rather than criss crossing the county.

Alloy Wheel Refurbishment in Cheshire

Yes. Signature covers Cheshire across the CH, CW, SK and WA postcode areas, including Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Macclesfield. The county starts about 30 miles from our Radcliffe body shop, between 35 and 60 minutes depending on where you are, so bookings are grouped into route days with mobile repairs and workshop collection both available.

A county page has to be honest about distance. Cheshire runs from the Wirral edge at CH through CW in the middle to the SK and WA districts nearest us, and the difference between the closest and furthest bookings is more than half an hour of driving. We handle that by grouping jobs geographically and giving you a date on the run that suits your postcode.

The area around Wilmslow, Alderley Edge and Knutsford has a higher concentration of premium and performance cars than anywhere else we work, and that changes the job mix. Large diameter diamond cut wheels, low profile tyres and dark painted finishes are the norm rather than the exception, and all three are less forgiving of a poor repair than a standard silver alloy.

Away from the towns the damage comes from the road surface. The lanes around Macclesfield and the edge of the Peak carry potholes that flatten rim edges and crack wheels outright, and low profile tyres give the alloy almost no protection when a car drops into one. Those wheels get inspected properly before anyone talks about welding.

Which parts of Cheshire do you cover on a single run?

The SK and WA side of the county is closest and often gets paired with south Manchester or Stockport work in the same day. Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Macclesfield form the core of that run, and it is the one we make most often.

CH and CW take longer, so those are planned separately and grouped where we can, taking in Chester and the mid Cheshire towns together. Distance never changes the price. It changes which day we can offer you, which is why sending photographs early gets you a better choice of dates.

Why do so many Cheshire jobs involve diamond cut wheels?

Because that is what the cars are wearing. A diamond cut face is machined on a lathe rather than painted, which gives it the bright turned finish common on premium models. It also means it cannot be touched in: the whole face has to be re-cut and re-lacquered to look right.

That is workshop work, not driveway work, so those wheels come to Radcliffe on our free collection and delivery. Kerb scuffs on painted alloys, chipped lacquer and colour changes on standard finishes are handled mobile across Cheshire in the normal way.

How does alloy wheel refurbishment work?

The technician starts by cleaning the wheel and the damaged area so the true extent of the scuff, chip or corrosion is visible. What looks like a light scrape often turns out to have lifted lacquer around it, and that has to come off too or the repair will fail.

The tyre is then masked to protect it from sanding dust and overspray. Most repairs are carried out with the wheel still on the vehicle. The damaged area is sanded back to sound metal, and where the profile of the rim has been chipped away, filler is used to rebuild the edge before it is sanded flush and feathered into the surrounding finish.

Once the surface is flat and clean, the technician applies primer, then a colour matched basecoat mixed to the manufacturer paint code, then lacquer. Each coat is cured before the next goes on. Done properly, the repair is invisible: you should not be able to find where the damage was.

Which parts of Cheshire do you cover?

Cheshire begins about 30 miles from the Radcliffe body shop and stretches well beyond that, so the county is worked in planned runs of 35 to 60 minutes each way. The concentration of premium cars means more diamond cut and dark painted finishes than anywhere else we cover.

We work throughout Cheshire and the CH, CW, SK, WA postcode areas, typically 35 to 60 minutes from the body shop at Radcliffe, M26 4AD. That includes Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Knutsford and Macclesfield.

What we cover

Alloy Wheel Refurbishment we carry out in Cheshire

Kerb scuff repair

The everyday one. The damaged rim edge is sanded, rebuilt where needed, then colour matched and lacquered so the repair disappears into the original finish.

Diamond cut wheel repair

Diamond cut faces are machined on a CNC lathe rather than painted, which is why they cannot be touched in. We re-cut the face and re-lacquer it to restore the original bright finish.

Split rim wheel repairs

Split rims have a bolted outer edge and often a polished lip with a coloured centre. They must be stripped down, which makes them a longer job than standard alloys. Some wheels look like split rims but are replicas, so send a photo if you are unsure.

Bespoke colour and colour changes

Silver to gloss black, satin finishes, greys, reds and two tone combinations. We match to a sample where we can, and where an exact match is not achievable we agree a finish with you before starting.

Corrosion and lacquer peel

Cars near the coast and cars that have spent winters on salted roads suffer white corrosion under the lacquer. The finish has to come off entirely and the wheel be rebuilt from bare metal.

Cracked wheel welding

Many cracked alloys can be welded and refurbished rather than replaced. We assess each wheel individually and will not weld anything we would not put on our own car.

Answers

Alloy Wheel Refurbishment in Cheshire: common questions

Is there a minimum job size for coming out to Cheshire?

No minimum, but distance shapes the scheduling. A single wheel in Wilmslow or Knutsford goes onto the next run we make in that direction rather than triggering a trip of its own, which usually means a few days rather than the same afternoon. The price is unaffected by where in Cheshire you are.

Do you cover the whole of Cheshire or just the north?

The whole county. CH, CW, SK and WA are all inside our area, from Chester and the Wirral border across to Macclesfield and the Peak edge. The further south and west you are, the more the booking depends on a planned route day. Ring 0161 667 0919 with your postcode and we will tell you the next available date.

What happens if a Cheshire pothole has cracked my wheel?

Send photographs and we will look at where the crack sits. Many cracks on the inner rim can be welded and the wheel then fully refurbished, which costs far less than a replacement. A crack running through a spoke or across the mounting face is a safety issue and we will tell you to replace the wheel instead of taking payment for a repair that should not be done.

Can you match the finish on a large diameter premium wheel?

Yes. Paint is mixed to the manufacturer colour code and blended into the surrounding finish rather than the whole wheel being resprayed. Diamond cut faces are different: they are machined back on a lathe and re-lacquered, which restores the original bright cut rather than imitating it with paint. Both carry a guarantee on parts and workmanship.
