What is specialist vehicle repairs?

Specialist vehicle repairs cover the vehicles a standard car body shop is not set up for: plant machinery, HGVs, vans, fleet cars, motorhomes, caravans and boats, plus vehicle interiors. Signature repairs damaged panels, bumpers, paintwork, leather and dashboards on site across Manchester and the North West, or at its Radcliffe body shop when the job needs controlled conditions.

Not every vehicle can be dropped off and left for a week. A telehandler working a site in Bolton, a fleet of vans out six days out of seven, a motorhome sat on a driveway waiting for spring: they all scuff, dent and fade the same way a car does, but taking them off the road costs money the damage never did.

Signature has been repairing specialist vehicles since 2008, alongside the everyday car work. Heavy plant, HGVs, commercial vans, fleet cars, caravans, motorhomes and boats have all been through our hands, and most of that work happens where the vehicle already is, across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and West Yorkshire.

The principle does not change with the vehicle. Repair the damaged area rather than replace the whole panel, match the colour to what is actually on the vehicle now, and hand it back in service the same day where the job allows. When something genuinely needs a booth and controlled conditions, it comes to the body shop at Radcliffe instead.

What counts as a specialist vehicle repair?

Anything that is not a standard car. In practice that means plant and machinery, HGV cabs and trailers, commercial and fleet vehicles, caravans, motorhomes, boats and vehicle interiors. The damage itself is usually familiar (scraped panels, dents, scratched paint, kerbed bumpers, faded or peeling finishes) but the size of the vehicle, or where it sits, makes a conventional workshop repair impractical.

What changes is the preparation. A steel HGV cab, an aluminium panel, a fibreglass caravan body and a textured plastic bumper all want different abrasives, different primers and different handling before any colour goes near them. Get that wrong and the basecoat and clear coat sit on top of a surface they will eventually let go of, which is why a cheap repair on a big vehicle rarely lasts a winter.

  • Excavators, dumpers, telehandlers and site plant
  • HGV cabs, curtainsiders and trailers
  • Commercial vans and fleet cars
  • Caravans, motorhomes and boats
  • Lease vehicles due back with the finance company
  • Interiors: leather, dashboards, carpets and trims

Do you come to us, or does the vehicle come to you?

We come to you for most of it. The mobile vans carry paint mixing, spray and curing equipment, so a technician can work in your yard, at a depot, on a construction site or on a driveway, and the vehicle goes back into service without ever being trailered anywhere.

Some work still belongs in the body shop at Radcliffe. Full resprays, heavier panel damage, anything needing a genuinely dust free environment, and larger leisure vehicle jobs are better done under a roof with proper extraction. We tell you which it is when we quote, rather than turning up and discovering it.

Weather sets the limit on site work. Rain, blowing grit and low temperatures all stop lacquer hardening the way it should, and the result of pushing on regardless shows up months later as a dull patch or a lifting edge. We would rather move a booking by a day than hand back a repair we know will fail.

How do I avoid end of lease damage charges?

Get the damage repaired before the vehicle is inspected. Leasing and finance companies check returned vehicles against a fair wear and tear standard and charge for anything outside it at their own rates, item by item, which is normally a good deal more than the repair would have cost you.

Our lease return packages are built around exactly that. We look over the vehicle, tell you which marks are likely to be charged for and which will pass, then repair the ones worth repairing. Light stone chips on a bonnet and a faint scratch that polishes out are usually inside the standard, and we will say so rather than invoice you for work that changes nothing.

Timing matters more than people expect. Book the look over a few weeks before the return date, while there is still room to get the work done without rushing it.

  • Kerbed alloy wheels and scuffed wheel trims
  • Bumper scrapes, corner scuffs and cracked plastics
  • Door dents, trolley dings and car park damage
  • Scratched and chipped paintwork
  • Cigarette burns in seats, carpets and trims
  • Scuffed leather bolsters and marked dashboards

Can you repair damage inside the vehicle as well?

Yes. Cigarette burns in upholstery, carpets and trims, damaged leather and scuffed or cracked dashboards are all repaired on site, using filling and colouring products chosen to suit the material rather than a single all purpose kit.

Be clear about what an interior repair is, though: it is cosmetic, and it is a temporary measure. A burn that has been filled and colour matched looks right and will stand up to an inspection, but the fibres that burned away are gone and nothing puts them back. If you want the fault dealt with permanently, the section of upholstery or the carpet needs replacing, and we will tell you that up front rather than sell you the same repair twice.

What we cover

Specialist Vehicle Repairs we carry out

Plant and machinery repairs

Excavators, dumpers, telehandlers and yard plant collect damage no car ever would. Damaged panels are prepared, primed and refinished on site, in the machine's own colour, so it stays on the job instead of going on a low loader.

Commercial vehicle repairs

Vans, tippers, HGV cabs and trailers repaired through the mobile service. Bumper scuffs, sliding door damage, dented panels and tired paintwork are the usual list, and most of it is a same day job at your premises.

Fleet vehicle repairs

We work through fleets in batches, visiting the depot and dealing with several vehicles in one go rather than pulling them out one at a time. Fleet work is priced on the number of vehicles involved, so tell us the size of the fleet when you enquire.

Lease return packages

An assessment against the fair wear and tear standard, followed by repairs to the damage that would otherwise be charged back to you. Cheaper than the leasing company's rates, and far cheaper than finding out about it after the inspection.

Motorhome, caravan and boat repairs

Leisure vehicles from bumper and panel repairs through to full resprays. Most of it can be done mobile, on the drive or at the storage site. Larger resprays and heavier structural cosmetic work come to the Radcliffe body shop.

Interior and upholstery repairs

Cigarette burns in seats, carpets and trims, scuffed or split leather, and marked dashboards. Colour matched to the surrounding material. A cosmetic repair, and honest about being one.

Answers

Specialist Vehicle Repairs: your questions answered

How much do specialist vehicle repairs cost?

It depends on the vehicle, how many areas are damaged and whether the work can be done on your site. A scuffed van bumper is a small job. A machine needing several panels prepared and refinished, or a motorhome respray, is not. Quotes are free, fixed and given with no obligation, normally within 24 hours of you sending photographs. Fleet work is priced on the number of vehicles involved.

How long will the vehicle be off the road?

Most single vehicle repairs are finished within a day, and plenty inside a few hours, which is the whole point of coming to you rather than taking the vehicle away. Full resprays, heavier panel work and anything booked into the Radcliffe body shop typically run one to three working days. We give a realistic time at the quote stage, not an optimistic one.

Can a cigarette burn in a car seat be repaired?

Usually, yes. The burn is cleaned out, filled with a compound suited to the fabric, leather or carpet, then colour matched to the material around it. Understand what you are getting, though. It is a cosmetic repair that will pass a lease inspection and look right day to day, but the burnt fibres are gone for good. A permanent fix means replacing the upholstery or the carpet.

Do you come out to a depot or a construction site?

Yes, and that is how most of this work gets done. The mobile vans carry paint mixing, spray and curing equipment, so we can work in a yard, at a depot, on site or on a driveway anywhere across Greater Manchester and the surrounding counties. Full resprays, heavier panel damage and anything needing a dust free environment come to the body shop in Radcliffe instead.

Is it worth repairing a lease car before handing it back?

Almost always. Leasing companies inspect returned vehicles against a fair wear and tear standard and charge for anything beyond it at their own rates, per item. Kerbed alloys, bumper scuffs, door dents and burnt upholstery are the ones that catch people out. Have the vehicle looked over a few weeks before the return date, while there is still time to book the repairs in.

Can you match the paint on a fleet van or a machine?

Yes. Paint is mixed to the manufacturer colour code where there is one, and matched to the vehicle as it stands where the finish has weathered, which is common on plant and older fleet vans that have spent years outdoors. The repair is blended into the surrounding panel rather than stopped at a hard edge. If the damaged panel carries vinyl graphics or livery, mention it when you enquire.

Are your repairs guaranteed?

Every repair carries a guarantee on parts and workmanship, whether it was carried out on your site or at the Radcliffe body shop. If something is not right, we come back and put it right. We will also tell you before we start when a repair is not worth doing. A panel that needs replacing does not become sound because somebody has painted it.

When can the vehicle be washed or put back to work?

Most vehicles go straight back into service the same day. Paint carries on hardening for a couple of weeks after it has cured, so keep pressure washers off the repaired area, avoid brush washes, and leave polish and wax alone until then. Ordinary hand washing is fine. Give interior repairs a day before heavy use, and keep solvent based cleaners away from repaired leather and dashboards.
