Alloy Wheel Refurbishment in Liverpool

Liverpool is fifty minutes along the M62 from our body shop, and the wheels we see there usually show two problems at once: kerb damage on the rim and corrosion spreading from it.

Alloy Wheel Refurbishment in Liverpool

Yes. Signature covers Liverpool from the city centre out through Aigburth and Woolton, thirty four miles and about fifty minutes from the Radcliffe body shop. Mobile technicians repair kerb scuffs, chips and lacquer damage across the L postcodes at your home or workplace. Wheels needing stripping to bare metal, colour changes or diamond cut refinishing are collected free of charge.

River air is the difference between Liverpool wheels and inland ones. Cars parked within reach of the Mersey pick up salt on the finish all year, not just through a gritted winter, and salt only needs one break in the lacquer to get underneath. A kerb scuff left over a Liverpool winter frequently comes to us with white corrosion already spreading out from the original mark.

The city itself supplies plenty of those breaks. Georgian streets around the centre have high stone kerbs and setts that were laid for horses rather than nineteen inch wheels. Parking decks serving the centre and the Albert Dock have tight ramps with raised edges. Further out through L17, L18 and L25 the roads are wider, but cars are parked tight on both sides and the kerbs are just as unforgiving.

Getting there is straightforward. The M62 runs almost door to door, so Liverpool sits on a planned route day rather than a special trip, and bookings usually land within a few days of the quote. Where wheels need the workshop, we collect and return them free of charge, so nobody has to drive a car across the Pennines side of Manchester to get finished work back.

Why do Liverpool wheels corrode as well as scuff?

Because the lacquer is the only thing holding the salt off. Alloy wheels are aluminium under paint, and aluminium reacts readily once moisture and chloride reach it. On the coast and along the Mersey there is a constant supply of both. A chip you can barely see with a fingernail is enough of a doorway, and from there the corrosion travels sideways beneath the finish rather than downward into the metal.

What that means practically is that Liverpool wheels are worth catching early. Light corrosion around a scuff can still be sanded back and refinished on your drive in a couple of hours. Once white bloom has spread across the face and started lifting lacquer in sheets, the whole finish has to come off and the wheel be rebuilt from bare metal, which is a workshop job rather than a mobile one.

Can you work on a Liverpool street rather than a driveway?

Often, yes, but it needs a bit of planning. The technician needs enough room to open the van doors and get properly around the wheel, which is harder on a narrow terraced street than on a driveway in Woolton. If the space is tight, moving the car a short distance to a quieter stretch or into a nearby car park usually solves it, and we will talk that through when the booking is made.

Repairs are carried out with the wheel still fitted wherever possible, so the car is not going up on stands in the road. A single kerbed wheel takes two to four hours from arrival to finished, including cleaning, masking, sanding back, rebuilding the rim edge, then primer, colour matched basecoat and lacquer with each coat cured before the next.

How does alloy wheel refurbishment work?

The technician starts by cleaning the wheel and the damaged area so the true extent of the scuff, chip or corrosion is visible. What looks like a light scrape often turns out to have lifted lacquer around it, and that has to come off too or the repair will fail.

The tyre is then masked to protect it from sanding dust and overspray. Most repairs are carried out with the wheel still on the vehicle. The damaged area is sanded back to sound metal, and where the profile of the rim has been chipped away, filler is used to rebuild the edge before it is sanded flush and feathered into the surrounding finish.

Once the surface is flat and clean, the technician applies primer, then a colour matched basecoat mixed to the manufacturer paint code, then lacquer. Each coat is cured before the next goes on. Done properly, the repair is invisible: you should not be able to find where the damage was.

Which parts of Liverpool do you cover?

Liverpool is reached along the M62 in around fifty minutes and sits on a scheduled Merseyside route day. Sea and river air on this side of the region means corrosion is a bigger part of the work here than kerb damage alone.

We work throughout Liverpool and the L1, L2, L3, L4 postcode areas, typically 50 minutes from the body shop at Radcliffe, M26 4AD. That includes Liverpool city centre, the Albert Dock, Woolton and Aigburth.

What we cover

Alloy Wheel Refurbishment we carry out in Liverpool

Kerb scuff repair

The everyday one. The damaged rim edge is sanded, rebuilt where needed, then colour matched and lacquered so the repair disappears into the original finish.

Diamond cut wheel repair

Diamond cut faces are machined on a CNC lathe rather than painted, which is why they cannot be touched in. We re-cut the face and re-lacquer it to restore the original bright finish.

Split rim wheel repairs

Split rims have a bolted outer edge and often a polished lip with a coloured centre. They must be stripped down, which makes them a longer job than standard alloys. Some wheels look like split rims but are replicas, so send a photo if you are unsure.

Bespoke colour and colour changes

Silver to gloss black, satin finishes, greys, reds and two tone combinations. We match to a sample where we can, and where an exact match is not achievable we agree a finish with you before starting.

Corrosion and lacquer peel

Cars near the coast and cars that have spent winters on salted roads suffer white corrosion under the lacquer. The finish has to come off entirely and the wheel be rebuilt from bare metal.

Cracked wheel welding

Many cracked alloys can be welded and refurbished rather than replaced. We assess each wheel individually and will not weld anything we would not put on our own car.

Answers

Alloy Wheel Refurbishment in Liverpool: common questions

Do you cover the whole of Liverpool or just the city centre?

The whole city, from L1 through to L25. That takes in the centre and waterfront, the inner suburbs, and the south Liverpool districts around Aigburth, Allerton and Woolton where most of our Merseyside bookings come from. Mobile visits happen at homes and workplaces, and anything needing the workshop is collected from your address at no cost.

My alloys are peeling rather than kerbed. Can that be fixed in Liverpool?

Yes, but not on the driveway. Peeling lacquer means the seal has failed across the wheel, so patching one area just leaves the rest to lift later. The wheel needs stripping to bare metal, rebuilding and refinishing under workshop conditions. We collect from Liverpool free of charge, turn the wheels round in one to two working days, and deliver them back.

How long does it take to get a technician to Liverpool?

A quote comes back inside 24 hours of you sending photos, free and with no obligation. The visit itself is scheduled onto a Merseyside route day, usually within a few days, because the city is fifty minutes each way along the M62. Grouping jobs on the same day is what keeps travel costs out of the price you are quoted.

Can you repair a diamond cut wheel scuffed on a city centre car park ramp?

Yes, at the workshop. The bright machined face on a diamond cut wheel is produced on a CNC lathe, so it cannot be sprayed back in on site. We collect the wheel, re-cut the face and re-lacquer it at Radcliffe, normally within one to two working days. If the face has already been re-cut too many times, we will tell you rather than take the wheel.

Will winter salt damage the repair once it is done?

Not if the repair is done properly. The point of sanding back to sound metal, priming, colour matching and lacquering is that the finish is sealed again rather than covered up. Every repair carries a guarantee on parts and workmanship. What does cause repeat problems is patching over corrosion that has not been fully removed, which is why we strip badly affected wheels rather than blending them.
