What sort of chip damage do you see around Halifax?
More of it low down than in most places. Steep gradients, wet stone and heavy winter gritting mean material is thrown at the sills, lower doors and the area behind the front arches as well as at the front of the car. Mirror caps and the leading edge of the bonnet still take the worst of it on anything doing motorway miles.
The other thing we see is chips left too long. Water in an open chip on a hillside road freezes overnight, expands and lifts the paint edge away from the metal, so a small mark spreads outwards over a winter. Once corrosion has started under the surrounding paint it has to be cleaned out before the repair can be built back up.
What causes stone chips on a car?
Stone chips are caused by loose gravel, grit and road debris flicked up by the tyres of the vehicle in front of you. The faster the traffic, the harder the stone hits, which is why motorway and dual carriageway driving does far more damage than town miles.
Winter makes it worse. Gritters put down salt and sharp grit, and both get thrown around by every vehicle on the road. Water then works into the chip, freezes, expands and lifts the paint edges away from the metal. That is why a chip you noticed in October is often three times the size by March.
