How to Paint Alloy Wheels: A Complete Step by Step Guide
A body shop guide to painting alloy wheels at home: stripping, kerb damage repair, etch primer, base coat and lacquer, plus when the job needs a professional.

To paint alloy wheels properly, remove them from the car, clean and degrease them, repair any kerb damage, key or strip the old finish, then apply etch primer, colour and lacquer in several thin coats with the correct flash times between them. Preparation determines the result far more than the paint does.
Painting alloy wheels is one of the few jobs where a competent amateur can get close to a professional result, provided they accept that roughly 80 per cent of the work happens before any colour goes on. Wheels live in the harshest environment on the car: brake dust at 200 degrees, salt, grit, kerbs and constant flexing. Paint that would survive for years on a bonnet fails in months on a rim if the preparation was rushed.
This guide covers the full process as a body shop would approach it, the equipment that genuinely matters, the mistakes that ruin otherwise good work, and where the line sits between a sensible DIY job and one worth handing over.
Why paint alloy wheels at all?
Painting wheels does three things: it changes how the car looks, it seals the aluminium against corrosion, and it hides accumulated kerb damage. The second point is the one people forget.
- Appearance. Wheels have a disproportionate effect on how a car looks. A colour change from silver to anthracite, satin black or bronze transforms a car for a fraction of the cost of any other cosmetic change.
- Corrosion protection. Bare aluminium reacts with road salt and moisture, producing white powdery corrosion that creeps under the surrounding finish and lifts it. Once lacquer is broken by a kerb strike, the wheel is on a clock. Sealing it stops that.
- Tidying up damage. A refinish resets the wheel. Scuffs, scrapes and lacquer peel disappear, which matters particularly at the end of a lease when wheel damage is one of the most commonly charged items.
What painting does not do is fix structural problems. A cracked, buckled or heavily corroded wheel needs assessing properly before anyone spends time on the finish.
What paint will not fix
Check the wheel honestly before you start. Paint sits on top of problems, it does not remove them.
- Cracks. Any crack in a rim or spoke is a safety issue. Some can be professionally welded and re certified, many cannot. Do not paint over one.
- Buckles. A dented rim causes vibration and slow air loss. It needs straightening first.
- Deep gouges. Kerb damage that has removed a significant amount of metal from the rim flange affects the tyre bead seal. It needs filling and shaping properly, not just paint.
- Diamond cut faces. The bright machined finish on a diamond cut wheel cannot be reproduced with paint. It is produced by taking a fine cut off the face on a lathe. Once you paint over it, going back means having the wheel re cut by a specialist.
- Heavy corrosion under the lacquer. If white oxidation has spread widely under the finish, the whole wheel needs stripping. Painting over it guarantees the new finish will lift.
What you need to paint alloy wheels
Buy the consumables once and buy them properly. Most failed home wheel jobs come down to using household paint products on a component that gets hot, wet and salted.
Preparation
- Non acidic wheel cleaner and a stiff brush
- Panel wipe or isopropyl alcohol for degreasing (not white spirit, which leaves residue)
- Abrasive paper in 320, 400, 600 and 800 grit, plus a grey abrasive pad
- Paint stripper suitable for aluminium, or a wire cup brush on a drill for stubborn areas
- Two part body filler intended for metal, plus applicators
- Masking tape and masking paper, plus thin card or old inner tube strips for the tyre bead
Paint
- Etch primer or self etching primer designed for bare aluminium
- High build primer filler
- Wheel specific base coat or a quality automotive aerosol in your chosen colour
- Two pack aerosol lacquer if you can get it, or a good quality one pack acrylic lacquer
Safety and equipment
- Proper respirator with organic vapour cartridges, not a dust mask. Two pack products contain isocyanates and are genuinely hazardous, so read the safety data sheet before you buy
- Nitrile gloves and eye protection
- A clean, dust free, well ventilated space above about 15 degrees
- Axle stands, a torque wrench and the locking wheel nut key
How to paint alloy wheels step by step
Work on one wheel from start to finish before starting the next, or set all four up in parallel if you have the space. Either way, follow the same sequence.
1. Remove the wheels
Slacken the wheel bolts while the car is on the ground, then jack it up and support it on axle stands. Never work under a car held only by a jack. Take all four wheels off if you are doing a full set.
It is worth having the tyres removed from the rims if you can, since it lets you paint the full rim edge and inner barrel. If that is not practical, deflate the tyre slightly and push the bead away from the rim edge so you can tuck masking card underneath.
2. Clean and degrease
Wash the wheel inside and out with a non acidic wheel cleaner and a brush, getting into the spoke roots and behind the barrel. Brake dust bonds to the finish and will contaminate everything downstream if it stays.
Once dry, wipe the whole wheel with panel wipe. Do this again immediately before every coat of anything. Silicone from tyre dressings is the classic cause of fisheyes in fresh paint.
3. Strip or key the existing finish
Decide which route you are taking:
- Sound existing finish. Key the whole surface with 400 grit and a grey abrasive pad until there is no gloss left anywhere. New paint bonds mechanically to that scratch pattern. Any glossy patch you miss will be a peeling patch later.
- Failing finish. Strip it. Use a chemical stripper suitable for aluminium, following the instructions, and finish with abrasive paper. Avoid aggressive grinding on the wheel face, since it is very easy to change the shape of an edge and impossible to put the metal back.
4. Repair kerb damage
Sand the damaged area back until you have clean, bright metal with a feathered edge where the old finish meets it. Mix a small amount of two part filler and apply it slightly proud of the surface.
Once it has cured, shape it with 320 grit, then refine with 400 and 600. The critical part is the rim flange profile: hold a straight edge along the rim and sight along it from several angles, because a repair that feels right to the fingertips often looks wrong once light reflects off gloss paint. Take your time here. This step decides whether the finished wheel looks refinished or repaired.
5. Mask up
Mask the tyre with card or tape tucked between the bead and the rim, working all the way round with overlapping pieces. Cover the valve, and blank off the centre bore and bolt holes if you want to keep them clean. If the wheel has a machined lip or a two tone finish you are keeping, mask it now with fine line tape.
6. Prime
Apply etch primer first, in one light coat, over any bare metal. Etch primer contains an acid that bites into aluminium and gives the rest of the system something to hold onto. Without it, paint on bare alloy will eventually let go.
Follow with two or three coats of high build primer over the whole wheel, leaving the flash time stated on the tin between coats. Once hard, flat the primer with 600 then 800 grit wet, using a little washing up liquid in the water as a lubricant. Any imperfection you can feel now will be magnified by gloss colour and lacquer.
Dry, degrease and blow off with clean air.
7. Apply the colour
Shake the can for a full two minutes and warm it in a bucket of hand hot water if the workshop is cool, which improves atomisation noticeably.
- Hold the can roughly 20cm from the surface, or follow the manufacturer's stated distance.
- Keep the can moving parallel to the surface. Arcing your wrist produces heavy centres and dry edges.
- Overlap each pass by about half its width.
- Apply the first coat light, almost a dust coat, to give the following coats something to sit on.
- Build with two or three further coats, leaving the stated flash time between each.
- Do the barrel and the back of the spokes before the face, so the wheel is only handled while the visible surfaces are still clean.
Thin coats always beat thick ones. A heavy coat looks better wet and then runs, and a run in wheel paint means going back to flatting.
8. Lacquer
Lacquer provides the gloss and, more importantly, the chemical and physical protection. Apply two to three coats with correct flash times. If you are using two pack aerosol, once the activator is released you have a limited pot life, usually a few hours, so plan to do all four wheels in one session.
Two pack lacquer is significantly more durable against brake dust, fuel spills, wheel cleaner and stone chips than one pack acrylic. It is also more hazardous to spray, so use a proper respirator and good ventilation.
9. Cure before refitting
Wheel paint is touch dry in minutes and nowhere near hard for days. Leave the wheels somewhere warm and dust free for at least 24 hours before refitting, and ideally longer before the first wash. Full chemical cure on air drying lacquer can take up to a week.
When refitting, torque the bolts to the manufacturer's figure with a torque wrench, then recheck after 50 miles. Over tightening with an impact gun cracks fresh paint around the bolt holes and can distort the wheel.
Aerosol, spray gun or powder coat?
The right method depends on how many wheels you are doing, what equipment you have, and how durable the result needs to be.

Powder coating produces the toughest finish, but the wheel is baked at around 200 degrees, so tyres must come off and any wheel with structural repairs should be assessed first. It is also difficult to touch up locally later. Brush and roller application, occasionally suggested online, is a false economy on wheels: the finish holds brush marks, the film thickness is uneven, and it will not resist brake dust.
Common mistakes that ruin an alloy wheel paint job
Almost every failure traces back to one of these.
- Not degreasing between stages. Fingerprints contain enough oil to cause adhesion failure.
- Skipping etch primer on bare aluminium. The finish will lift, usually starting at the rim edge.
- Painting over a failing finish. New paint is only as sound as what it sits on.
- Coats too heavy. Runs, sags and a soft finish that stays soft.
- Ignoring flash times. Trapping solvent under the next coat causes dieback, where the gloss sinks away days later, and can wrinkle the surface.
- Painting in the cold or in damp conditions. Below about 15 degrees, solvents evaporate too slowly and the finish stays soft. High humidity causes blooming, a milky haze in the lacquer.
- Working in a dusty space. Every airborne particle lands on wet paint. Damp the floor down beforehand.
- Refitting too early. Wheel weights, bolt heads and tyre machines all mark uncured paint.
Looking after painted alloy wheels
A refinished wheel lasts years if it is maintained and a matter of months if it is not.
- Wash the wheels regularly, particularly through winter, so brake dust and salt do not sit on the finish. Brake dust is hot iron particles that embed into lacquer.
- Use pH neutral wheel cleaner only. Acidic cleaners strip lacquer and etch the underlying metal, and they will destroy a fresh finish quickly.
- Wait before waxing or sealing. Give fresh paint a couple of weeks to cure fully, then a sealant or wax makes brake dust much easier to remove.
- Deal with kerb damage immediately. The moment the lacquer is broken, moisture gets to the metal. A small scuff repaired promptly stays a small repair.
- Watch the tyre fitter. Ask for plastic bead protectors and no impact gun on the bolts.
DIY or professional refinishing?
Do it yourself if you have a warm, dust free, ventilated space, a weekend to spare, and the patience to spend most of it sanding rather than spraying. The cost is largely consumables and the result can be genuinely good.
Hand it over if the wheels are diamond cut, if there is significant kerb damage or corrosion, if you want a colour that has to be mixed rather than bought in an aerosol, or if the car is on a lease and the finish has to satisfy an inspection. A professional refinish uses a spray booth with filtered air and controlled temperature, oven cured two pack systems and blast or chemical stripping, and that combination is difficult to match on a driveway in Greater Manchester in November.
For a single kerbed rim, a mobile repair is usually the sensible route. The wheel is prepared, filled, primed and refinished in place in a few hours, and the colour is matched to the remaining three rather than the whole set being redone.
