SMART repair or body shop: which does your car need?
A practical guide to choosing between a mobile SMART repair and a body shop for your car damage. Honest advice from our Radcliffe team, covering Greater Manchester.

In short
A mobile SMART repair suits small, isolated damage like scuffs, chips and minor dents on a single panel, provided the paint isn't cracked and there's no crease. Larger dents, creased metal, cracked paint, or damage spanning multiple panels needs the controlled environment and equipment of our Radcliffe body shop.
What is the difference between a SMART repair and a body shop repair?
A SMART repair (Small to Medium Area Repair Technique) is a mobile service that fixes minor cosmetic damage on your driveway or at your workplace. We bring the tools and materials to you. A body shop repair happens in our Radcliffe workshop, where we have a spray booth, panel beating equipment and space to work on larger or more complex damage.
Both use the same team and both come with a guarantee. The question is which one suits your damage. Here is how we decide.
When does a SMART repair work well?
SMART repairs are ideal for damage that is small, contained and purely cosmetic. Examples include:
- Scuffed or kerbed alloy wheels
- Minor bumper scuffs and parking grazes
- Small dents where the paint is intact (like a shopping trolley ding)
- Stone chips and small paint defects
- Localised scratches that haven't gone through to the metal
If the damage is on a single panel, no bigger than an A4 sheet of paper, and the paint around it is sound, a SMART repair is usually the quickest and most convenient option. Many SMART repairs are finished in around two hours, so you can get on with your day.
When is a body shop the better choice?
Some damage needs the controlled environment and heavier equipment of a body shop. We recommend the Radcliffe body shop when:
- The dent is deep or has sharp creases. Creased metal needs panel beating and possibly filler, which is best done in a workshop.
- The paint is cracked or flaking around the damage. Cracked paint usually means the panel has flexed and the repair needs to be more thorough.
- Damage spans more than one panel, such as a scrape along the side of the car affecting the door and the rear quarter.
- The damage is on a complex area, like a wheel arch, sill or a panel with sharp body lines.
- You need a perfect colour match on metallic or pearlescent paint. A booth gives us better control over temperature and dust, which helps the finish.
In these cases, a mobile repair might not last or might not look right, so we will be honest with you and recommend the body shop instead.
How do I know which one my damage needs?
The simplest way is to send us photos of the damage. We can usually tell from a few clear pictures whether a SMART repair is suitable or whether it needs to come into the body shop. We reply within 24 hours with a free, no obligation quote and our recommendation.
If you are not sure, here is a quick checklist:
- Is the damage smaller than an A4 sheet? If yes, SMART repair is likely.
- Is the paint cracked or flaking? If yes, body shop.
- Can you feel a crease or sharp edge in the dent? If yes, body shop.
- Is more than one panel affected? If yes, body shop.
- Is it just a scuff or a small dent with intact paint? If yes, SMART repair.
What areas do you cover for mobile repairs?
Our mobile service covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire, Merseyside and West Yorkshire. So whether you are in Bury, Bolton, Salford, Manchester city centre or further afield, we can come to your home or workplace. We work Monday to Friday 09:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 09:00 to 16:00. We are closed on Sundays.
If your damage needs the body shop, you can bring your car to our Radcliffe site. We are at Unit C, The Yard, Rear of Constellation Mill, Radcliffe, M26 4AD. It is easy to reach from across Greater Manchester, including Bury, Bolton, Rochdale and north Manchester.
Can you do a SMART repair at my workplace?
Yes. Many customers choose a mobile repair at their workplace because it saves them a trip. We can work on your car in the car park while you are in the office. For a SMART repair that takes around two hours, it is often possible to have it done during a working day. We will confirm the details when you book.
What if I am not sure?
That is completely normal. Most people are not sure which repair their damage needs. That is why we ask for photos. It helps us give you an accurate answer and a free quote without you having to guess. We have been trading since 2008, and we will always tell you honestly if a mobile repair is not suitable.
How do I get a quote?
Just send us photos of the damage with your enquiry. You can do that through our website. We reply within 24 hours with a free, no obligation quote and our recommendation on whether a SMART repair or a body shop visit is the right way to go. Every repair we do carries a guarantee, so you can book with confidence.
We are here to help you get your car looking right again, with as little fuss as possible.
