Scuff & Scratch Repairs in Lancashire

The county runs from the Fylde coast to the Pennine towns on the Yorkshire border, and we repair scratched and scuffed paintwork across all of it from our Radcliffe body shop.

Scuff & Scratch Repairs in Lancashire

Yes. Lancashire is covered end to end from the Radcliffe body shop, between 25 and 60 minutes depending on the town, taking in the PR, BB, FY, LA and BL postcode areas. Signature works the county as route days, grouping nearby bookings together, and every repair is sprayed to your vehicle paint code and polished flush with the original finish.

Lancashire is too big to treat as one place, so it is worked in sections. Bolton and the BL postcodes are around 25 minutes from the body shop, Preston and Chorley roughly half an hour, Blackburn and Burnley 35 to 40 minutes, and the Fylde coast about an hour. Bookings are grouped by area, which is why you are offered a date rather than a same day call out for the far end.

The damage varies just as much. On the coast around the FY postcodes, salt air gets into every break in the paint and lifts the lacquer from the edges of old chips. Inland across the Ribble Valley and East Lancashire it is grit and stone off gritted moor roads, along with scrapes from narrow walled lanes. In the towns it is ordinary car park damage.

What does not vary is the method. The damaged area is flatted back, filled where it has gone deep, primed, sprayed in basecoat mixed to your paint code and lacquered, then machine polished until the repair is invisible in daylight. Most single panel work takes two to four hours, carried out at your home or workplace anywhere in the county.

How is a county as big as Lancashire covered?

By postcode cluster. PR, BB, FY, LA and BL take in everything from Preston and the Fylde to the Pennine border towns, and driving across the county takes longer than reaching most of it from Radcliffe. The diary therefore groups jobs: a Blackburn and Burnley day, a Preston and Chorley day, a Fylde coast day, each filled with bookings in that area.

The nearer towns are the exception. Anywhere in the BL postcodes is close enough for short notice work, because the body shop is only a few miles away. Wherever you are, the quote comes back within 24 hours of your photographs with a fixed price and the next date we are covering your area, and there is no obligation attached to it.

  • PR, BB, FY, LA and BL postcode areas all covered
  • 25 to 60 minutes from the Radcliffe body shop depending on the town
  • Preston, Blackburn and Burnley on regular route days
  • The Ribble Valley villages covered alongside Blackburn
  • Free collection and delivery on repairs brought to Radcliffe

Does scratch damage differ across Lancashire?

It does, and it changes the preparation. A car kept within a mile of the sea has salt in every chip and scratch, so the area around the damage has to be flatted back further to reach paint that is still properly bonded, and any corrosion cut out before primer goes anywhere near it. Skip that step and the repair lifts within a year.

Inland the problem is impact rather than chemistry. Moorland roads across East Lancashire throw sharp grit that cuts into lacquer, and narrow walled lanes in the Ribble Valley leave long shallow scrapes along doors and wings. Those repairs are more about blending a wide but shallow area convincingly, particularly on metallics where a hard edge to the new paint would show up in low sun.

How does a car scratch repair work?

The damaged area is sanded back, rebuilt layer by layer, resprayed in a colour matched paint and then polished into the surrounding panel. The technician starts by washing and degreasing the area so nothing gets trapped under the new paint, then masks off everything around the repair to keep dust and overspray off the rest of the car.

The scratch itself is flatted back until the edges are no longer sharp, which is what stops the repair showing as a line later. Deeper damage is filled and built up in stages rather than in one thick coat. The area is then primed, and the basecoat is mixed to your vehicle's paint code and sprayed in thin passes so the colour builds evenly.

Lacquer goes on last, and the panel is finally machine polished and buffed so the new clear coat sits flush with the old and reflects light the same way. Done correctly you should not be able to find the repair by eye or by running a hand over the panel.

Which parts of Lancashire do you cover?

Lancashire is covered end to end from Radcliffe, grouped into route days by postcode so neighbouring towns are visited together. Coastal salt damage and moorland stone chipping mean the same scratch gets prepared differently at either end of the county.

We work throughout Lancashire and the PR, BB, FY, LA postcode areas, typically 25 to 60 minutes from the body shop at Radcliffe, M26 4AD. That includes Preston, Blackburn, Burnley and the Ribble Valley.

What we cover

Scuff & Scratch Repairs we carry out in Lancashire

Key scratch repair

A key or a ring dragged down a car usually cuts straight through the clear coat and colour into primer. The scratch is flatted, filled where it has gone deep, primed and resprayed, then blended along the panel so the repair does not stop in an obvious line.

Bumper scuffs and corner scrapes

Bumpers take the most abuse and are the easiest thing to scrape on a bollard or a low wall. Plastic bumpers need a flexible primer and the right technique, otherwise the paint cracks the next time the bumper flexes in cold weather.

Car park and door edge damage

Chipped door edges, scrapes along the crease line and the marks left by the car parked next to you. Small individually, but they collect, and a car with damage on three doors reads as tired even when the rest of it is clean.

Light scratch and swirl removal

If a scratch has only disturbed the lacquer and your fingernail does not catch in it, machine polishing will often take it out with no paint at all. We will tell you when that is the case rather than spraying something that does not need spraying.

Deep scratches to bare metal

Once a scratch reaches the steel or aluminium underneath, it will corrode. These are built back up in stages, primer first, then colour, then lacquer, so the panel is sealed properly rather than covered over.

Lease returns and pre sale tidy ups

Cosmetic damage is charged hard at the end of a lease or knocked off the price by a trade buyer. Getting the scuffs and scratches sorted beforehand normally costs less than the deduction and makes the car far easier to sell.

Answers

Scuff & Scratch Repairs in Lancashire: common questions

Which parts of Lancashire do you cover?

The whole county, across the PR, BB, FY, LA and BL postcode areas. That runs from Preston and the Fylde coast through Chorley, Blackburn and the Ribble Valley to Burnley and the Pennine towns on the Yorkshire border. Because the distances are large, towns are grouped onto route days, and your quote comes back with the next date we are covering your area.

How long does it take you to reach the far side of Lancashire?

Between 25 minutes and an hour from the Radcliffe body shop. Bolton and the BL postcodes are closest, Chorley and Preston around half an hour, Blackburn and Burnley 35 to 40 minutes, and Blackpool and the Fylde coast the full hour. The further areas are booked onto planned days so a single visit covers several jobs rather than one.

Can you repair several vehicles at one site in Lancashire?

Yes. Fleet and forecourt work is straightforward for the mobile unit, because the equipment travels with it and cars can be worked through one after another without leaving the site. That suits business car parks, dealer pitches and anywhere with several vehicles needing cosmetic tidying. Send photographs of each and the quote covers them together.

Is a mobile repair possible in winter?

Often, but the weather has the final say. Basecoat and lacquer need a dry surface and reasonable temperature to flash off and cure properly, so rain, damp or near freezing conditions will move an appointment rather than risk a finish that fails inside a year. In a prolonged wet spell the body shop at Radcliffe is the better option, with free collection and delivery.

What is the difference between a scuff repair and a scratch repair?

Depth, mostly. A scuff is surface damage where something has rubbed against the paint, often on a bumper corner, and it may sit only in the lacquer. A scratch has cut a line into the finish and frequently reaches the colour, the primer or the metal beneath. Both are repaired with the same SMART methods, but a deeper scratch needs filling and priming first.
