Does stone chip damage differ across Lancashire?
Noticeably. On the coast, salt in the air keeps an open chip damp and corroding, so the paint lifts around the mark far quicker than it would inland. Twenty five miles east, in the Pennine towns, the problem is volume instead: moorland grit and heavy winter gritting produce dozens of small chips at once rather than a handful.
That affects the sensible repair. A coastal car with a few chips through to metal wants sealing quickly, before winter. A Pennine car with a peppered bonnet is usually better served by preparing and blending the whole panel than by treating each chip separately. We say which one applies when we quote rather than pricing the longer job by default.
What causes stone chips on a car?
Stone chips are caused by loose gravel, grit and road debris flicked up by the tyres of the vehicle in front of you. The faster the traffic, the harder the stone hits, which is why motorway and dual carriageway driving does far more damage than town miles.
Winter makes it worse. Gritters put down salt and sharp grit, and both get thrown around by every vehicle on the road. Water then works into the chip, freezes, expands and lifts the paint edges away from the metal. That is why a chip you noticed in October is often three times the size by March.
