Stone Chip Repairs in Leeds

Yes. Signature repairs stone chips throughout Leeds, covering LS1 and LS2 in the centre and out to Headingley, Roundhay and Horsforth. At 45 miles and about an hour over the M62, this is the furthest city we visit regularly, so work there is booked as a full day mobile visit or collected and brought to our Radcliffe workshop.

Leeds is the furthest city on our regular list, 45 miles and an hour over the M62 from Radcliffe. That distance shapes the booking rather than the price. LS postcodes are given a full day with several cars at a time, instead of one off call outs, and a few days notice gets you onto the next run.

Chip damage here comes from two ends of the city. Commuter cars using the M62 and M621 collect the standard motorway peppering along the bonnet edge, the mirror caps and the front bumper. City centre parking adds chipped door edges and shuts, where doors are opened against pillars and neighbouring cars in tight multi storey bays.

The suburbs are different again. Cars kept in Headingley, Roundhay and Horsforth spend less time in car parks and more on the faster roads out of the city, so the front end takes the damage while the door edges stay clean. Either way the fix is the same few hours of work, and it is worth doing before water gets under the paint.

How are Leeds bookings scheduled?

As planned days rather than call outs. An hour each way makes a single job across the Pennines impractical, so we set a date for the LS postcodes and work through several cars, usually starting in the centre and moving out to Headingley, Roundhay or Horsforth. Ring 0161 667 0919 with photographs and we will give you the next date.

The alternative for larger work is collection. If the chips are dense enough to need a full panel blend, or corrosion has already spread under the paint, the car comes to the Radcliffe body shop and collection and delivery costs nothing. That usually suits customers here better than losing a driveway to a two day job.

  • Leeds city centre, LS1 and LS2
  • Headingley and LS6
  • Roundhay and LS8
  • Horsforth and LS18
  • LS16 and LS17 in the north of the city
  • Workplace car parks along the M62 corridor

Can you repair chipped door edges in Leeds?

Yes, and they are among the most common jobs we take on in the city. Multi storey bays in the centre are narrow, doors get opened against concrete pillars and other cars, and the folded edge of a door carries the thinnest paint on the vehicle. Once it is chipped, the paint flakes outwards from the mark.

The repair is quick but it does need somewhere sensible to do it. A public multi storey is not workable, so we ask for a driveway, a private yard or a reserved workplace space where the car can stand for a couple of hours. If you live in a city centre flat, tell us when you book and we will sort out where the car can go.

What causes stone chips on a car?

Stone chips are caused by loose gravel, grit and road debris flicked up by the tyres of the vehicle in front of you. The faster the traffic, the harder the stone hits, which is why motorway and dual carriageway driving does far more damage than town miles.

Winter makes it worse. Gritters put down salt and sharp grit, and both get thrown around by every vehicle on the road. Water then works into the chip, freezes, expands and lifts the paint edges away from the metal. That is why a chip you noticed in October is often three times the size by March.

Certain parts of the car take nearly all of it, because they face forward and sit low.

  • Leading edge of the bonnet and the top of the front wings
  • Front bumper, grille surround and lower valance
  • Wing mirror caps and A pillars
  • Windscreen surround and the front edge of the roof
  • Lower doors and sills, behind the front wheels
  • Door edges and shuts, chipped in car parks rather than on the road

Which parts of Leeds do you cover?

We work throughout Leeds and the LS1, LS2, LS6, LS8 postcode areas, typically 60 minutes from the body shop at Radcliffe, M26 4AD. That includes Leeds city centre, Headingley, Roundhay and Horsforth.

What we cover

Stone Chip Repairs we carry out in Leeds

Bonnet and leading edge chips

The classic motorway damage. Chips concentrated along the front of the bonnet and the top of the wings, filled and blended so the panel reads as one colour rather than a row of touched in dots.

Front bumper and lower panel chips

Bumpers are plastic, so they will not rust, but the paint still flakes outwards from every chip. Because bumper plastic flexes, it needs flexible primer and a proper key before colour goes on.

Chips through to bare metal

Where the stone has gone through lacquer, basecoat and primer to the steel. Corrosion is cleaned out and the area is rebuilt from primer up. These are the ones worth booking quickly, especially over winter.

Door edges and mirror caps

Chipped door edges from tight car park bays, and mirror caps sandblasted by grit. Small areas, quick to do, and usually the difference between a car looking cared for and looking neglected.

Peppered panels and full panel blends

When chips are too dense to treat individually, the panel is prepared as a whole and blended into the adjacent panels so the new paint matches the age and tone of what is already on the car.

Answers

Stone Chip Repairs in Leeds: common questions

Do you charge extra for coming out to Leeds?

No. The fixed price quoted from your photographs is what you pay here, the same as it would be in Bury. What the distance changes is timing. At an hour each way we run LS postcodes as scheduled days with several cars booked in, so a little notice makes a real difference to the date you are given.

How many chips can be repaired in one Leeds visit?

On a planned day, plenty. A typical car with chips spread across the bonnet edge, bumper and mirror caps is two to four hours of work, and we book several vehicles into each run. What we will not do is rush the last car so it fits, because curing time is not something that can be shortened to suit a diary.

Would my car be better collected than repaired in Leeds?

It depends on the damage. A handful of chips, or a set of chipped door edges, is straightforward mobile work at your home or workplace. A bonnet that needs blending as a whole panel, or a chip with rust spreading under the paint, is better done indoors at Radcliffe. Collection and delivery on workshop jobs is free.

What is the M62 doing to my paintwork?

Throwing stone at it. Grit lifted by the vehicle in front hits at motorway speed and takes out lacquer and colour, which is why the leading edge of the bonnet, the top of the wings and the mirror caps chip first. Winter is worse, because gritters put down sharp material that stays on the carriageway for weeks afterwards.
